Strong SEO does not equal AI visibility. This B2B technology company ranked well on Google - but had zero presence inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. No citations. No crawls. No appearances in the assistant-led conversations their buyers were using to evaluate vendors.

The Challenge

The client website was well-structured for traditional search but had not been built with AI discovery in mind. Key problems included fragmented content that did not form clear topical clusters, minimal structured data, no llms.txt file to guide AI crawlers, and a thin resource layer that gave AI models nothing to reference or cite. Buyers in their space were increasingly asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for vendor comparisons, use case guidance, and category definitions - and the client was invisible in every one of those conversations.

The Solution

We built a full GEO infrastructure across four connected workstreams. Knowledge Clusters: Structured the content into tightly linked topical clusters - a primary hub page per key topic, supported by sub-pages, comparison pages, and FAQ entries. This gave AI models a clear signal of depth and authority on each subject area. Schema Markup Overhaul: Implemented and improved structured data across all key pages - Service, FAQPage, WebPage, BreadcrumbList, and Organisation schemas - ensuring AI crawlers could extract structured facts rather than relying on raw text inference. Free Tools and Resources: Built a layer of genuinely useful free tools and downloadable resources. These act as citation anchors - when AI models recommend tools or resources in a category, the client now has specific assets that earn references. llms.txt Optimisation: Wrote and deployed a comprehensive llms.txt file with clearly structured instructions, content summaries, and page-level context for major AI crawlers. This was one of the highest-leverage single changes - AI systems use this file to understand what a site covers and how to represent it accurately.

The Results

Results were immediate and measurable. 53,300 requests from ChatGPT (OpenAI) recorded within the first monitoring window following the initial update - confirming active crawling and content evaluation by OpenAI systems. The site is now actively cited across multiple AI platforms including ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others in the client category - appearing in responses to vendor comparison, use case, and category definition queries. Daily AI crawler activity is now consistent across major models, indicating the site has been indexed and flagged as a reliable source. The client moved from zero AI presence to becoming one of the actively cited sources in their category - without changing their core product, pricing, or traditional SEO setup. The infrastructure work alone was sufficient to unlock citation eligibility.
