How Juniper was designed and developed as a calm, fast baby tracker for tired parents and busy caregivers, with one-handed logging, offline access, shared family timelines and useful daily insights.
The Challenge
Tracking a baby’s daily routine sounds straightforward until it has to be done repeatedly while feeding, settling, changing or holding a child.
Parents and caregivers may need to record feeds, sleep, diapers, bottle volumes, pumping sessions, medication, growth and other routine information throughout the day and night.
Many of those entries happen when the user is:
A conventional mobile form with multiple screens, small controls or unnecessary questions can create significant friction in those situations.
The product therefore needed to be designed around a very specific user:
> A sleep-deprived parent using one hand at 3am who needs to record something accurately in seconds.
Speed alone was not enough.
The app also needed to account for the reality that parents may forget to log an activity when it happens, start a timer and become distracted, lose internet access, hand care over to another person or need to provide a clear summary to a healthcare professional.
The core product challenge was to make logging almost effortless without reducing the usefulness or reliability of the information being collected.
Juniper also required a sustainable commercial model that could provide generous core functionality for free while supporting optional premium features such as account-based synchronisation, family collaboration and advanced reports.
The product needed to combine:
The Solution
We designed and developed Juniper as a React Native mobile application centred around speed, clarity and real-life parenting routines.
Rather than treating the product as a collection of standard data-entry forms, we designed each interaction around the circumstances in which parents would actually use it.
The resulting application allows users to record important baby-care activities in a few taps while keeping more detailed options available when they are needed.
1. Designing for One-Handed, Overnight Use
The core interface was designed to remain usable while holding a baby or navigating the app with one thumb.
Important logging actions are positioned within comfortable reach and presented through clear, recognisable controls.
The experience avoids forcing users through long questionnaires before they can save a basic entry.
Key interactions were designed around large touch targets, minimal typing, clear visual hierarchy, predictable button placement, short logging flows, sensible default values, and immediate confirmation after an entry is saved.
This makes it possible to record an event quickly without requiring the user to fully wake up, switch on bright lighting or work through an unnecessarily detailed form.
2. Quick Log System
Juniper’s Quick Log system provides direct access to the activities parents record most frequently.
Users can log breastfeeding, bottle feeding, pumping, sleep, diapers, soothing, growth, milestones, health information, activities, and general notes.
Each activity has a purpose-built flow rather than relying on one generic form.
This enables fast everyday logging while still allowing families to maintain a meaningful history.
3. Easy Backfilling for Missed Entries
Parents cannot always record an event at the exact moment it happens.
Juniper includes straightforward backfilling so users can create an entry for an earlier time without navigating through a complicated editing process.
The product makes a clear distinction between starting an activity now, recording a completed activity, and adding something that happened earlier.
4. Reliable Activity Timers
Feeds, sleep and soothing activities may continue for an uncertain amount of time, making timers an important part of the application.
We developed timer flows that allow users to start an activity quickly, see the current duration, stop and save it, correct the timing, and recover from accidental or forgotten timers.
Timer status remains clear throughout the experience, helping reduce duplicate or conflicting entries.
5. Offline-First Logging
Baby-care tracking cannot depend entirely on a stable internet connection.
Juniper was designed so its core logging functionality remains available on the device without requiring the user to create an account or maintain a continuous connection.
Entries can be created while offline, the app remains responsive during weak connectivity, essential tracking is not blocked, and users retain access to recent records on their device.
6. Shared Family and Caregiver Timeline
Baby care is often shared between parents, partners, relatives, nursery staff or other caregivers.
Juniper’s premium collaboration system allows authorised family members and caregivers to contribute to a shared timeline.
This gives participants visibility into recent activities such as when the baby last ate, how long the baby slept, when the last diaper change occurred, which caregiver recorded an activity, and whether a timer is already running.
7. Daily Timeline and Historical Records
All logged activities are organised into a clear chronological timeline.
Rather than requiring parents to open different sections for feeds, sleep and diapers, the shared timeline provides a consolidated view of the baby’s routine.
8. Useful Statistics and Pattern Insights
Juniper converts recorded information into daily and weekly summaries covering areas such as number of feeds, total feeding duration, bottle volume, sleep duration, diaper frequency, pumping activity, and growth trends.
The statistics organise recorded information so families can notice changes and make more informed care decisions.
9. Feeding and Bottle Tracking
Juniper supports different feeding routines, including breastfeeding, bottle feeding, expressed milk, formula, pumping, feeding duration, feeding side, and recorded bottle volumes.
The interface was structured so parents only need to enter the information relevant to the type of feed being recorded.
10. Sleep Tracking
The sleep tracker allows users to start and stop sleep sessions or enter completed sleep periods retrospectively.
Sleep information is incorporated into daily summaries and longer-term patterns.
11. Diaper Tracking
Diaper entries can be recorded in a small number of taps.
Recent diaper history is visible within the shared timeline and daily summaries, allowing caregivers to understand the baby’s recent routine during handovers.
12. Growth and Milestone Tracking
Juniper provides structured tracking for measurements such as weight, length, and head circumference.
Parents can also record milestones and important personal moments.
13. Health, Activities and Notes
Juniper includes flexible logging for health-related observations, medication or care notes, activities, soothing, milestones, and general information.
14. Night-Friendly Visual Experience
The application includes night-friendly appearance options designed to reduce visual intensity during low-light use, including a dedicated Red Night mode.
15. White Noise and Routine Support
Juniper includes built-in white-noise functionality with gentle fade-in and fade-out behaviour.
16. PDF and CSV Reports
Juniper allows users to export recorded information in PDF and CSV formats for partners, caregivers, health visitors, or doctors.
17. Privacy-Focused Product Structure
Juniper was structured so users can access core tracking features locally without being forced to create an account.
Cloud synchronisation and family collaboration are optional premium capabilities.
18. Free and Premium Product Model
The free version remains useful without operating as a limited trial.
Juniper+ adds account-based device synchronisation, shared family access, advanced insights, and detailed PDF reporting.
19. React Native Development
The application was developed with React Native to provide a maintainable mobile foundation while supporting a consistent product experience across mobile platforms.
20. App Store Preparation and Deployment
The project included preparing Juniper for App Store release, including iOS build preparation, device testing, subscription setup, privacy disclosures, metadata, screenshots, terms and privacy documentation, and release management.
The Results
