Black hat SEO: what it is (and why it backfires)

Black hat SEO is any tactic designed to manipulate rankings by breaking search engine guidelines, rather than improving the underlying value of the page. It often “works” briefly, but it’s fragile: once the tactic is detected, the upside disappears and you’re left with a trust problem.

Common black hat patterns

• Hidden content: stuffing keywords in invisible text, CSS tricks, or off-screen elements.
• Link schemes: paid links, private networks, automated link building, or unnatural reciprocal linking.
• Doorway pages: near-duplicate pages made only to rank and funnel users elsewhere.
• Thin “spun” content: low-effort rewrites at scale without unique expertise or usefulness.

What to do instead

• Build pages that satisfy intent with clear structure, helpful examples, and content that earns links naturally.
• Improve technical foundations: crawlability, canonicals, internal linking, and speed.
• If you inherit a risky backlink profile, prioritise removal where possible and document cleanup work.
