Access control: why it matters for websites and marketing stacks

Access control is how you decide who can access a system and what they’re allowed to do. For most marketing and web teams, the risk isn’t theoretical: a compromised account can change tracking, inject spam pages, leak customer data, or spend ad budget.

Common access control models

  • RBAC (Role-Based Access Control): permissions are assigned to roles (e.g. Analyst, Editor, Admin).
  • Least privilege: give the minimum permissions needed to do a job, then escalate temporarily when required.
  • Separation of duties: sensitive actions (billing, publishing, deployments) require different people or approvals.

Practical quick wins

  • Turn on MFA for email, CMS, analytics, tag manager, and ad accounts.
  • Use shared roles rather than shared passwords; remove old accounts when people leave.
  • Review admin access quarterly and keep audit logs enabled where possible.

Strong access control improves security and reliability - but it also improves operational clarity. When roles are clear, mistakes are less likely and changes are easier to trace.
