Anchor Links (Jump Links): Improving UX and SEO

An anchor link (often called a jump link) sends users to a specific section of a page rather than the top. You see them most often in tables of contents (like "Skip to section") or long guides. The URL changes to include a hash fragment, likeexample.com/page#section-id.

Benefits for SEO

  • Enhanced SERP Features: Google often displays these jump links directly in search results ("Jump to..."), giving you more screen real estate.
  • User Engagement: They help users find what they need instantly, reducing "pogo-sticking" (bouncing back to Google).
  • Context: They help search engines understand the structure and hierarchy of long-form content.

How to implement them

  • Add an id attribute to the target element (e.g., <h2 id="pricing">).
  • Create a link pointing to that ID (e.g., <a href="#pricing">).
  • Ensure the jump doesn't hide content behind a sticky header (use scroll-margin-top in CSS to fix this).

Anchor links are a simple, high-impact way to make long content more consumable and "skimmable" for both humans and bots.
