Overview: The 5 Stages of Approval
Applying for a Google Ad Grant in 2026 is no longer a single form; it is a sequence of verifications. If you miss one technical requirement, like a missing HTTPS certificate or a poorly structured first campaign, Google will reject the application.
At TwoSquares, we often see charities get stuck at the verification stage. Below is the roadmap to success.
For the full program overview (eligibility, rules, and compliance), see our Google Ad Grants handbook.
Step 1: Pre-Flight Eligibility Check
Before you touch a single Google form, your digital house must be in order. Google’s automated crawlers will audit your site the moment you apply.
- Charity Status: Ensure you have your Charity Commission (or OSCR/HMRC) number ready.
- SSL Security: Your site must be on
https://. Non-secure sites are rejected instantly. - Website Quality: You need at least 10 pages of unique, substantial content. A "One-Page" site will not qualify.
- No Commercial Conflict: Ensure you don't have Google AdSense or affiliate links (like Amazon Associates) running on your site.
Step 2: Register for "Google for Nonprofits"
This is your central hub. You aren't just applying for ads; you are applying for the entire Google nonprofit suite (including Workspace and YouTube features).
- Go to the Google for Nonprofits portal.
- Click "Get Started."
- Sign in with a new, dedicated Google Account (e.g.,
[email protected]).Tip: Avoid using a personal Gmail account; it makes transferring ownership later very difficult.
Step 3: The Verification Phase (Goodstack / TechSoup)
Google does not verify your charity status themselves; they use third-party partners. In 2026, the primary partner is Goodstack (formerly handled by TechSoup in many regions).
- The Validation Token: You will be redirected to the Goodstack/TechSoup portal to provide your charity documentation.
- The Wait: This process usually takes 3-5 business days.
- The Result: Once verified, you will receive a Validation Token. You’ll input this back into your Google for Nonprofits dashboard to "unlock" the Ad Grant application.
Step 4: Activating the Ad Grant
Now that Google knows you are a real charity, you need to "Enroll" in the Ad Grants program specifically.
- Log in to your Google for Nonprofits dashboard.
- Find the Google Ad Grants tile and click "Activate."
- The Pre-Qualification Survey: You will need to take a short quiz and survey about your goals.
- Creating the Shell Account: Google will guide you to create a Google Ads account.
- CRITICAL: Do NOT enter any credit card or billing information. If you do, you have created a Standard account, and the Grant cannot be applied to it.
- Currency: Ensure you select USD ($) as the currency, regardless of where you are located. The Grant is globally issued in US Dollars ($329/day).
Step 5: Building the "Compliance-Ready" Campaign
Google will not activate your $10,000 credit until they see that you can build a campaign that meets their 2026 standards. Your "Shell Account" must include:
- 2 Ad Groups: For example, "Volunteer Recruitment" and "Donations."
- 2 Ads per Group: You must use Responsive Search Ads (RSA).
- 2 Sitelink Extensions: Directing users to "About Us" or "Contact Us" pages.
- Geo-Targeting: You cannot target "The Whole World." You must target the specific regions where your charity actually operates.
- Conversion Tracking: You must have at least one conversion goal (e.g., a "Thank You" page after a donation) linked and active.
Common Rejection Reasons (And How to Avoid Them)
| Issue | Why it happens | The Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Low Quality Website" | Not enough content or broken links. | Add a blog section with at least 5 posts before applying. |
| "Mission Not Clear" | The site looks like a personal blog or a business. | Ensure your "About" page clearly states your charity number and mission. |
| "Invalid Keywords" | You used single words like "Charity" or "Help." | Use multi-word terms like "Donate to children's charity." |
How TwoSquares Makes This Easier
The application process can take between 10 to 20 hours of manual work and technical troubleshooting. TwoSquares provides two levels of help for the application phase:
- The Free "Application Roadmap": If you want to do it yourself, we provide a free 30-minute consultation to check your website and paperwork before you hit "Submit." We’ll tell you exactly what Google will flag so you can fix it first.
- The "Hand-Off" Setup: For a one-off fee (which we often discount for smaller nonprofits), we handle the entire process. We manage the Goodstack verification, build your first compliant campaign, and hand over a fully active, $10,000/month account ready for launch.
Summary Checklist
- HTTPS is active and site speed is healthy.
- Charity Number is in the footer of every page.
- Google for Nonprofits account is created.
