Conversion Tracking

The process of measuring specific actions users take after interacting with your site or ads, often via GA4 or Tag Manager.

Conversion Tracking: If You Can't Measure It, You Can't Improve It

Conversion tracking is the technical setup using pixels, tags, or server-side APIs to record when a user completes a goal (purchase, sign-up, call).

The three layers of tracking

  • Client-side (Pixels): The browser sends a signal to Facebook/Google. Easy to set up, but blocked by ad blockers and iOS privacy updates (ITP).
  • Server-side (CAPI): Your server sends the data directly to the ad platform. More accurate and privacy-compliant but harder to build.
  • Offline Conversions: Uploading CRM data (e.g., "Lead #123 actually bought a car") back into Google Ads to optimize for value, not just leads.

Warning: Broken tracking is the #1 cause of wasted ad spend. Test your tags before you spend a penny.

Average Position

A metric indicating where a page typically ranks in search results for a given query. Replaced by average ranking in GA4.

Behaviour Flow

A report in analytics tools showing how users navigate between pages and where they drop off.
