The Canonical Tag (rel="canonical"): The Original Source

A canonical tag is a snippet of HTML code in the <head> section of a page that tells search engines: "This is the master version of the page." It looks like this:<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/blog/seo-guide" />.

Why it's essential

  • Duplicate Content Prevention: If your site can be accessed via http, https, www, and different UTM parameters, you essentially have 10 versions of the same page. The tag tells Google which one to rank.
  • Syndication: If you republish your blog posts on Medium or LinkedIn, use a canonical tag to ensure your site gets the credit, not the third-party platform.

Common mistakes

  • Self-referencing missing: Every page should have a canonical tag pointing to itself (unless it's a duplicate).
  • Relative URLs: Always use the full absolute path (including https://).
  • Conflicting signals: Don't put a canonical tag on a page and then block it in robots.txt.
