Canonicalisation

The process of consolidating duplicate URLs to one preferred version for indexing.

Canonicalisation: The Strategy of Consolidation

Canonicalisation is the broader process (not just the tag) of picking the best URL when multiple choices are available. It involves using 301 redirects, canonical tags, and internal link structure to tell search engines which pages matter.

When to use what

  • 301 Redirect: When the duplicate page has no unique value and users shouldn't see it (e.g., an old version of a page). This passes 100% of the value.
  • Canonical Tag: When you want users to see the duplicate page (e.g., a printer-friendly version or a specific sort order) but want search engines to ignore it.

The Golden Rule

Be consistent. Don't submit URL A in your sitemap, link to URL B in your footer, and put a canonical tag on URL C. Confusing signals force Google to guess, and it might guess wrong.
