Keyword cannibalisation: competing with yourself

Keyword cannibalisation happens when multiple pages target the same query or intent, causing search engines to alternate which page ranks. This can dilute authority, confuse indexing signals, and lead to unstable rankings - especially when pages are very similar.

How to fix it

  • Consolidate overlapping pages into a single stronger page (and redirect).
  • Use canonicals when duplicates must exist.
  • Differentiate intent and internal linking so each page has a unique job.

Cannibalisation is usually a site architecture problem, not a “keyword” problem.
