The strategic decision between developing custom solutions or purchasing existing products and services.

"Build vs. Buy" is the strategic decision of whether to develop a custom solution in-house (Build) or purchase an off-the-shelf software product (Buy). In marketing stacks, this often applies to CMSs, analytics platforms, and reporting dashboards.

The frameworks for deciding

  • Is it core to your value?: If you are an ecommerce brand, your checkout experience is core, maybe build it. If you are a law firm, your billing system is not, buy it.
  • Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): "Buying" has a license fee. "Building" has developer salaries, maintenance, hosting, and technical debt. Building is almost always more expensive than you think.
  • Time to Market: Buying is usually instant. Building can take months. Can you afford to wait?

The Hybrid Approach

Modern stacks often "buy" the core engine (e.g., Shopify, Salesforce) and "build" custom integrations or front-ends on top of them. This gives you stability without sacrificing flexibility.
